I first met Kelsey at Amelies Bakery in NoDa, and we were not prepared for each other. Her guard was down, so was mine. We were with a group of friends that wanted to learn how to play this board game called Settlers of Catan. I spent all night looking at Kelsey and thinking of ways to gently prove to her that I was not the kind of guy who loves board games, even though I am. We laughed together all evening, and at the end of the night I looked Kelsey square in the eye, asked her out and got her number.
When it came to the engagement, people said, Wednesday must have had special significance for you. It must mean something.
No, I said. I got engaged on a Wednesday because I had the ring and I wanted to give it to her.
That night, we went out to a fancy restaurant and went for a nice walk afterward. During that time, Kelsey was looking at me as if trying to send me a message, and that message was clear: You are going to give me a ring.
But my misdirection was so convincing that Kelsey texted her mom, telling her that it wasnt going to happen tonight another opportunity where he doesnt pop the question. I could see the air leaking out of her steadily, the buoyancy from anticipation gone. Finally, she gave up. Lets just go home, she said.
She plopped down on the couch and took off her shoes. I assured her she was going to want to sit up for this. I turned on the TV and hit play on the DVD player. She was expecting an episode of Mad Men.
The video lasted all of two minutes. The music started and there was a picture of us together on the screen and then she knew. Her hands went to her face and the tears started to flow and Jack Johnson started singing and the pictures kept coming. There were images of her as a child, as a teenager, as an undergrad and as a woman. There were images of us together, dancing, smiling and hugging.
By this time, Kelsey was bawling and not really seeing any of it, and she doesnt remember me getting down on one knee and asking her to marry me. All she remembers is the part where she said yes. Wednesday didn't mean anything before. It does now.Kelsey and Jeremy will be married on June 16, 2012Continue reading real wedding stories! Up next: Passport to Love
