Jenny Hausler, a sophomore at Providence High, and Alekhya Mallavarapu, a senior at Butler High, were recently awarded American Association of Teachers of German Study Trip Awards which provides airfare to Germany and a four week stay in the country.
Both girls were chosen after scoring in the top 10 percent on the 2012 National German Exam for High School Students, making them eligible to apply. They then had to write essays in German and English, participate in a German phone interview, meet minimum GPA requirements and attain teacher recommendations.
Jenny was chosen as the N.C. non-senior nominee and Alekhya was chosen as the N.C. nominee for the senior trip award. Both were selected by The National Board to be awarded with the trip from less than 100 nationwide. While in Germany, the girls will stay with host families, as well as take excursions to other German cities, visit schools and go on field trips.
I have never been out of the United States and going to Germany will be an amazing first experience, Jenny said. My great-grandparents were from Germany and I still have distant relatives there, even though I have never met them.
