Emma, a freshman at Providence Day, and Patricia, a freshman at Ardrey Kell, were chosen along with 10 other Girl Scouts from around North Carolina to serve as pages for Governor Bev Perdue March 12-16. In addition to daily responsibilities, pages had the opportunity to attend press conferences, participate in service projects and tour historic landmarks. To be selected, students had to have strong academic standing, academic and community recommendations and write an essay about a political issue. Both girls have achieved the Silver and Bronze Awards in Girl Scouts and are working on their Gold Award.
Emma is very involved with the Providence High theater department and active in her youth group. She has served on multiple mission trips and local volunteer efforts. She is also a competitive fencer. Emma is interested in politics and law and in her application to be a page, she wrote about the Occupy Wall Street and Occupy North Carolina movement.
Patricia was one of 12 girls to represent the Girl Scouts Hornets’ Nest Council at the National Girl Scout Leadership Institute in Houston last year where she helped create a website on health issues affecting teenage girls. She has a passion for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) and intends to promote STEM to middle school students as part of her Gold Award project. She is also a member of FIRST robotics team 3506, National Honor Society and Technology Students Association.
