I’m skipping town to go back to my hometown to see my family, and while it’s nice to get away, I always hate leaving Charlotte as I know I’m missing something fun. This weekend is no exception.
Friday
Want to see a short film that will make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside while also inspiring you? Go check out the DVD release party and screening of “Aphasia,” the true story of Charlotte actor Carl McIntyre who, after suffering a massive stroke and losing his ability to read, write and talk, struggles against overwhelming odds to redefine his life. McIntyre will speak, along with Nancy Helm-Estabrook, a speech pathologist recently seen in a “60 Minutes” interview discussing her work with Congresswoman Gabby Giffords. 7 p.m. $25. www.aphasiathemovie.com.
The weather has become so hot and cold you wonder if Mother Nature is menopausal, but this weekend the highs are supposed to be in the 80s – perfect for the patio bar at VBGB Beer Hall and Garden in the NC Music Factory. Play giant versions of Jenga or Chess on what just might be the biggest patio in Charlotte … or, if it’s too warm for you, chill out inside at the ice bar. Celebrities including Wendy Williams, Tamia, Tyrese and Ruben Studdard will be in town for For Sisters Only, a one-day celebration of women at the Charlotte Convention Center (501 S. College St.).
