More Information

The votes are tallied and results are in for nominees in the inaugural Blumey Awards, a ceremony to honor young performers in the region.

The 2012 Blumenthal Performing Arts High School Musical Theater Awards ceremony will be held May 20 at Belk Theater. Charlotte joins a group of more than 30 cities offering a high school version of the Tony Awards.

Finalists were chosen after judges attended productions at 20 high schools from the 16-county region the Blumenthal serves.

Of the finalists, one senior male and female will each win $10,000 college scholarships, renewable annually, from the Doctor Family Foundation. The best actress and best actor winners will perform at the National High School Musical Theater Awards in June, during a one-week, all-expenses-paid trip to New York.

A house of about 2,100 is expected for the gala evening in Belk Theater. The night will feature performances from each of the six finalists for the Wells Fargo Best Musical Award and performances by the finalists for best actor and best actress.

Best actor/actress finalists will perform specially-written medleys that include a number from their show. Participating schools will also nominate two students to perform in the awards ceremony’s opening and closing numbers. Students nominated for best supporting actor and best supporting actress also will be invited to participate.

Between performances, local celebrities will present winners in all 13 categories.
