Officials from Matthews and Mecklenburg County are set to break ground Thursday on a planned sports complex in the southern town.
The ceremony is set for 9:30 a.m. on Tank Town Road in Matthews. Expected speakers include county commissioners Harold Cogdell and Jennifer Roberts, Matthews Mayor Jim Taylor and other town and parks officials.
The county said the Matthews Sportsplex will feature 12 multi-use fields for sports like soccer, lacrosse, baseball and rugby, along with a stadium that can house up to 7,000 people. Officials hope the facility will draw both local and national tournaments.
The $34 million sports complex has been in the works for nearly a decade. The county has pledged $32 million toward the projects construction, with Matthews committing $2 million.
The Sportsplex will be off Interstate 485 near the Independence Boulevard interchange and will be adjacent to a possible mixed-use family entertainment complex. Observer archives contributed
