The winner: Every week, I had to untangle or straighten out my small garden flag. Tired of doing it over and over again, I used two small magnets to weight the bottom of the flag to prevent it from tangling. With the two magnets attached from each side of the flag, it hangs beautifully on windy days. (See photo.) Kathy Bumgardner, Denver, N.C.

Sock it to your ladder

My 5-foot step ladder gets a lot of use inside and out. To keep dirt off the floors/carpets and to keep from scratching my hardwoods, I put kids’ old socks on each foot and hold them in place with the help of a staple gun. Easily put on and off depending on where I am working, I put a staple in each sock to hold it in place. When I go to use the ladder outside, I pull the staple with a staple puller or pliers. It’s worth the time and effort and I’ve never had a problem with the ladder slipping or being unsteady because of the socks. Randy Cook, Waxhaw
