Several members of an area gay-rights organization put up a banner over the Hawthorne Lane bridge on Thursday morning to protest the passage of the state’s so-called marriage amendment.

The banner – reading “Equality Will Prevail” – was put up by members of the Charlotte Rainbow Action Network for Equality, or CRANE.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police are currently on the scene but hadn’t yet intervened on the protest. The bridge overlooks Independence Boulevard.

CRANE said it is a coalition of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and intersex (LGBTQI) activists and community members in the Charlotte area.

In a news release, the organization said the protest would be the first of several planned actions by the organization to “raise awareness and agitate toward positive, LGBTQI-inclusive change in Charlotte and North Carolina.”

The case could cause some onlooker delay, and drivers are encouraged to use Pecan Avenue, Central Avenue or Seventh street as an alternate route.
