Notable Items

The Charlotte Housing Authority website, www.cha-nc.org, was selected for two awards of distinction in the 18th Annual Communicator Awards by the Academy of the Visual Arts. The site was recognized for its home page and in the category of charitable organizations/non-profit.

Eugene Cochrane Jr., president of the Duke Endowment in Charlotte, was appointed to the board of Council on Foundations, a national nonprofit association of grant-making institutions.

Jose Alejandro Donoso, volunteer counselor at Charlotte SCORE, was named 2012 NC “Minority Small Business Champion” by the Small Business Administration. This award recognizes Donoso for his support of minority small businesses. Donoso developed a local and national Spanish web page for SCORE to help the Hispanic small business community access critical information on financing and resource tools.

Moore & Van Allen spearheaded Mecklenburg County’s first Legal Food Fight by challenging all county attorneys to make a nonperishable food or monetary donations in the month of April to benefit the Second Harvest Food Bank. The Food Fight raised $3,705 and more than 400 nonperishable food items. Molly Foy from U.S. Trust, Bank of America Private Wealth Management, was the Food Fight Champion. First runner-up was Erin Taylor of the Federal Defenders of Western North Carolina, Inc. Second runner-up was Moore & Van Allen bankruptcy member Ben Hawfield.

Dr. Vetta Higgs of the Levine Cancer Institute, Sharon Matthews of Wells Fargo, Carin Ross Johnson of Bank of America, Beatriz Suris of Greater Carolinas Women’s Center and Park Williams of BDP International have joined the Komen Charlotte Board of Directors.

Justin Karas, CEO of Karas Hospitality, LLC and operator of Newk’s Express Cafes in Charlotte, was recently appointed to serve as the Government Relations Committee chair by North Carolina Restaurant and Lodging Association.

Jose Valbuena was recognized by Allstate Insurance Company as the Rising Star of the Year for North Carolina.
