Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools officials are expected to break ground on a new elementary school that is expected to ease overcrowding in the northern end of the county.
A ceremony is set for 10 a.m. Tuesday to mark the start of construction for the new school, which will be located in the 15000 block of Stumptown Road in Huntersville. The site also includes room for a future high school.
The 39-classroom school is designed to offer relief to nearby Torrence Creek Elementary. The school is expected to open in 2013, and would be CMS’ first new school since 2010.
Money for the school was approved in a 2007 school bond package. But construction was delayed as the county temporarily halted new projects after the recession.
County commissioners approved money for the Stumptown project earlier this year. In April, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg school board OK’d a $11.75-million contract with Matthews Construction Company to build the facility.
