Merit Scholars

Seniors Michelle Fogarty (Providence High), Elizabeth Shen (South Mecklenburg High) and Oliver Sun (Ardrey Kell) have been awarded National Merit $2,500 Scholarships.

The $2,500 Merit Scholar designees were chosen from more than 15,000 finalists in this year’s program. Semifinalists were the highest-scoring program entrants in each state and represented fewer than 1 percent of the nation’s seniors.

National Merit $2,500 Scholarship winners are the finalists in each state judged to have the strongest combination of accomplishments, skills and potential for success in rigorous college studies. They were selected by a committee of college admissions officers and high school counselors.

The Scholars may use their awards at any regionally accredited U.S. college or university. By year’s end, about 8,300 academic champions will have won National Merit Scholarships worth more than $35 million.
