1 hurt in Hickory apartment fire

One person was injured Tuesday evening when fire damaged an apartment building in Hickory, fire officials say.

The fire was reported shortly after 5 p.m. at a building in the 100 block of 9th Avenue SE. Firefighters were able to contain the blaze to a single apartment, officials say.

One person was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation. Terri Byers, a spokesperson for the Hickory Fire Department, said damage to the unit and contents was “reported to be major.”

Byers said the fire’s cause was cooking-related. The American Red Cross chapter provided help for the displaced family.
