Lincoln County Sheriff’s deputy in wreck on route to emergency call

A Lincoln County sheriff’s deputy was injured early Wednesday after authorities said he lost control of his vehicle while responding to an emergency call and struck a pole.

Authorities said it was raining at the time of the wreck, and they believe the deputy hit a pool of water and hydroplaned.

Deputy James Owens was taken to the hospital and treated for cuts to his head, the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.

The sheriff’s office said Owens was driving on Reepsville Road in Lincolnton just after midnight to respond to a reported break-in at the Hampton’s BP. Authorities said he was running his emergency lights and siren at the time.

Authorities say after hydroplaning, Owens ran off the road and struck a utility pole, splitting the pole. They said the patrol car is believed to be a total loss.
