Providence student wins ‘Right Thing’ award

A Providence High School ninth-grader has been named winner of this year’s Do The Right Thing Award in Charlotte.

Alexander Gonzalez was honored Monday night by Charlotte City Council during its meeting. Gonzalez won the award after being credited for helping save the life of his 2-year-old sister Maya in March.

His sister stopped breathing on March 17, and Charlotte fire officials say the teen used CPR, which he had learned as a member of Matthews-based Boy Scout Troop 39, to resuscitate his sister. Maya, who suffered a seizure, has since recovered.
