United Technologies Corp. could receive as much as $19 million from the state to help set up a regional headquarters in Charlotte after the company completes its acquisition of Goodrich Corp., the governor’s office announced Tuesday.
United Tech announced that it would buy Charlotte-based Goodrich, a Fortune 500 aeronautics and defense firm, in an $18.4 billion deal in September. It is scheduled to close in July.
Soon after the announcement of the sale, Goodrich said its presence would be maintained in a new business unit known as UTC Aerospace Systems.
The governor’s office said Wednesday that United Tech, which manufactures aerospace and industrial products, has committed to 325 jobs and investing $4 million over five years at a new divisional headquarters for that business unit.
It’s not clear how many of the jobs would be new hires. Goodrich currently employs 200 at its corporate headquarters off Tyvola Road in Charlotte.
Once the acquisition closes, that headquarters will cease to exist, though a number of its employees likely will move to the new regional facility, United Tech spokesman John Moran said.
The state has awarded United Tech a $2.5 million grant to support the new divisional headquarters, contingent on the company receiving a local grant. The company also could get an additional $16.5 million in grants over the next dozen years should it meet performance targets, the governor’s office said.
Shortly after the acquisition was announced, United Tech said the senior leadership of the combined business unit would remain in Charlotte. But the company also considered locations in Lancaster County, S.C., York County, S.C., Florida and Virginia for the division headquarters, N.C. Department of Commerce spokesman Tim Crowley said.
Not affected by this announcement are the 300 Goodrich employees who work at an airline and defense maintenance and repair facility in Monroe. Moran said United Tech is continuing to make decisions about how that facility will be integrated into the combined company.
Goodrich representatives were unable to be reached for comment.
