Providence Day’s team has placed second in the nation in the Siemens We Can Change the World Challenge.
Seeking ways to be less dependent on non-reusable energy, sophomores Cam Love, Tanner Love, Savannah Morgan and Daniel Morrow developed a way to harness energy through electromagnetic inductance, by inserting “cells” into an antifatigue mat.
That let them store energy that could power simple, lifesaving devices such as Steripens (portable water purification systems). Each team member receives an equal share of a $25,000 scholarship.
Barbara Morrow, the team’s adviser and a science teacher at Providence Day, receives a $1,000 grant for the school.
