BOONE -- A Watauga County teen was killed and four others injured late Thursday night in a single-vehicle wreck north of Boone, the N.C. Highway Patrol says.
Killed in the crash was 16-year-old Dillon Luther Critcher, of Boone. He and another teen were riding in the back bed of a Ford Ranger pick-up truck that flipped several times near Elk Knob State Park in northern Watauga County.
Troopers say the wreck happened shortly before 10:45 p.m. on Meat Camp Road, a few miles east of the North Carolina-Tennessee border. According to troopers, the driver of the truck was southbound on Meat Camp Road when he apparently lost control of the vehicle and went off the right side of the road. He then over-corrected, troopers say, and swerved off the left side of the road before overturning.
The other teen in the back bed was seriously injured and airlifted to a hospital in Johnson City, Tenn. The driver and two other teens riding in the truck were treated at Watauga Medical Center for less-serious injuries.
The Highway Patrol says it does not believe alcohol was involved. The crash remains under investigation, troopers say.
