The Lake Norman boys’ lacrosse program has been on the rise the past few seasons.
But after several disappointing finishes to the past seasons, coach Kevin Gowin and his Wildcats team finally proved they were the state’s best this year, outlasting Cardinal Gibbons 9-8 in the N.C. High School Athletic Association championship game to complete a perfect 23-0 season.
Lake Norman was led by All-Observer Player of the Year, senior attacker Danny Brown, who notched 70 goals and had 40 assists.
Brown, who will play at the Air Force Academy beginning this summer, completed his All-American season with a hat trick in the state title game, also earning All Region Player of the Year honors.
Meanwhile, Gowin earned Observer and Regional Coach of the Year honors for helping his team to an unbeaten season, a state title and a Conference 10 title (where they were a perfect 10-0).
Brown will team with Myers Park attacker Reid Foley, the Mecklenburg Player of the Year, next season at the Air Force Academy.
Foley led the Mustangs to a 17-4 mark and a Conference 11 title before falling 13-7 to Lake Norman in the state semifinals.
Charlotte Latin’s Dick Sipperly is the Mecklenburg Coach of the Year, after leading his Hawks to their first NCISAA state lacrosse title since 2005.
Latin went 17-2 this season and finished as the No. 1 team in the state, according to laxpower.com.
