2 charged after pedestrian struck, killed in Cornelius

Cornelius police have charged two men after a pedestrian was struck and killed early Saturday.

Jacob Andrew Kost, 23, of Winston-Salem faces multiple charges, including murder, driving while impaired and felony hit and run.

A passenger in Kost’s vehicle, who was identified as Jason Edward Shaw, 21, was charged with accessory to murder, police said.

Both suspects were being held in the Mecklenburg County jail late Saturday.

Police said the collision occurred just before 2 a.m. on Bethel Church Road near the intersection with Madison Manor Drive, police said.

Officers arriving on the scene found the victim, identified as Kevin Andrew Sweet of Cornelius, unresponsive in the roadway. He was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Witnesses gave police a description of the suspect vehicle, which detectives found in a nearby neighborhood.

Police said the crash remained under investigation.
