Stallings’ new police chief’s name might be familiar to town residents -- Minor Plyler, a longtime member of the Union County town’s law enforcement department, and the brother of Stallings’ first police chief.
Town Manager Brian Matthews said Monday that Plyler, who has been with the Stallings police for seven years, most recently as a lieutenant, will take over management of the 23-member department.
The town’s new chief is the brother of Larke Plyler, who directed the Stallings police department from its start in 2004 until he retired in August 2010.
Minor Plyler, like his brother Larke, had worked with the Union County Sheriff’s Office. The new chief also has worked with Matthews police and the Union County Emergency Communications Department in his 29 years of police-related experience.
He replaces Michael Dummett, who resigned March 29 after having been placed on administrative leave in early February. One town official said Dummett was put on leave after several police department employees complained about him.
No details of the complaints ever were made public. Dummett later went to work with the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office.
“Minor has an internal knowledge of the department which gives him insight into its strengths and weaknesses, without any learning curve or transitional period,” Matthews said.
Earlier last month, Matthews said the town had received about 30 applications for the chief’s position.
