Rowan teacher suspended for Obama outburst

SALISBURY -- The North Rowan High School teacher seen in a YouTube video telling a student not to criticize President Obama has been suspended for 10 days without pay, according to the Salisbury Post.

Tanya Dixon-Neely’s sharp rebuke of student Hunter Rogers came during a social studies class discussion of accusations that Republican president candidate Mitt Romney’s had bullied another student while in high school. Rogers asked if Obama also had been accused of bullying, and Dixon-Neely told him not to disrespect the President.

At least two Facebook pages have started, calling for Dixon-Neely to be fired, but another Facebook page with several hundred followers is seeking support of the teacher.

The Salisbury Post says the decision to suspend the teacher came during a meeting Monday.
