An estimated 4,500 people attended the 13th Annual Asian Festival and

7th Annual Dragon Boat Festival at Ramsey Creek Park in Cornelius on

May 5.

More than 13 countries and regions of the Asian-Pacific were

represented, bringing many rich and diverse cultures together.

Ryan Anzar, a senior at Hough High School, was there with his friend

Andrew Somera, 22. “I didn’t think there were that many cultures in

the area.” said Anzar.

The one-day festival included the Dragon Boat races as well as the

elegance of the Miss Asia Carolinas 2012 Pageant. Monique Tuzon, Miss

Philippines, won the Miss Asia Crown.

Many kinds of authentic Asian food, music, dance, cultural exhibits,

art and traditional clothing were represented.

Performances from China, India, the Philippines, Thailand, Cambodia,

Japan, Korea, Laotia, Indonesia, and Vietnam were featured. The

Peaceful Dragon Academy provided martial arts demonstrations, music

and a traditional dragon dance.

The Asian Festival and Dragon Boat Races were organized by the

Carolinas Asian-American Chamber of Commerce, Mecklenburg County Park

and Recreation, and the Charlotte Dragon Boat Association. Visit Lake

Norman and the Town of Cornelius hosted the event.
