Man shot at North Tryon gas station

By Meghan Cooke macooke@charlotteobserver.com

A man was seriously hurt Tuesday afternoon in a shooting on North Tryon Street, less than a mile outside of Charlotte’s uptown.

The shooting happened just before 3:30 p.m. in the parking lot of a gas station at the corner of North Tryon Street and Dalton Avenue.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said the victim was with a woman and another man. After a “brief confrontation,” one man shot the other in the lower abdomen and then fled the area in a brown four-door sedan driven by the woman, police said.

The vehicle was seen heading toward Statesville Road on Dalton Avenue, according to police. The shooter remained at large Tuesday afternoon.

Police didn’t reveal what might have sparked the confrontation but said that the people involved “had some type of prior relationship.” The victim and suspect have not yet been identified.

The victim was taken to Carolinas Medical Center with injuries described as life threatening.

Nearly an hour after the shooting, police spokesman Officer Robert Fey said the injured man was stabilized and heading into surgery.
