Motorist pulls woman to safety after car runs off road, into pond

MOORESVILLE A passing motorist helped save the life of an elderly driver whose car went off Flowering Grove Road shortly after noon today, landing in a retention pond, where it began to sink, fire officials said.

The motorist jumped into the water and pulled the victim toward shore, Assistant Fire Chief Shane LaCount said.

Rescue personnel and two bystanders soon arrived and also pulled the victim out of the water.

The elderly driver was taken to Lake Norman Regional Medical Center in Mooresville with nonlife-threatening injuries, LaCount said.

“The actions taken by the first passing citizen directly impacted the survival of the victim – he saved a person’s life today," LaCount said.

The names of the victim and passing motorist weren't immediately released.
