Suspect named in E. Charlotte slaying

Police have released the name of a suspect in the fatal shooting of a 21-year-old man at an east Charlotte apartment complex early Saturday.

Police said they were looking for 19-year-old Arnold Jerad Thomas.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg officers responded to a call for help at 2520 Lanecrest Drive, off Milton Road, at 3:32 a.m. When they arrived, they found Dantonio Gerrick Hamilton in the parking lot of the apartment complex. He’d been shot, police said.

Paramedics pronounced him dead minutes later, at 3:43 a.m.

In May 2010, Hamilton was charged with murder in the death of 20-year-old Devon Clement, who was gunned down in front of dozens of people at a Cook-Out restaurant on West Sugar Creek Road. Police said Clement was killed during an argument in the parking lot.

Hamilton and two others were arrested in the case. Prosecutors said the only gunshot that struck Clement was fired by another suspect, Cherelle Griffin. She pleaded guilty last year to second-degree murder.

Last November, Hamilton pleaded guilty to discharging a gun into occupied property. He was sentenced to 25-39 months in prison, but that sentence was suspended pending his successful completion of three years on supervised probation.

Anyone with information about Saturday’s shooting is asked to call 704-432-TIPS or Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
