Former Morganton mayor dies

Paul Cash Sr., who was mayor of Morganton in the late 1960s and early 1970s and remained a community leader in Burke County for decades after, died Friday of injuries suffered in a fall.

Cash, 88, was injured while climbing steps at Mimosa Insurance Agency, the company he directed for a half-century in Morganton. He was taken to Carolinas Medical Center, where he died of his injuries.

Cash took over management of the insurance company from his father and then entered politics, being elected mayor of Morganton in 1967. He served for six years. Afterwards, he remained active in Burke County civic, business and political activities.

He was a decorated bomber pilot in World War II. His wife of 65 years, Mildred, died in 2010.

Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Tuesday at First United Presbyterian Church in Morganton.
