Caldwell probes suspicious fire

LENOIR -- A fire late Sunday night at a vacant mobile home is being called “suspicious” by Caldwell County fire officials.

Investigators are looking into a blaze that was reported shortly before midnight Sunday at the mobile home, in the 4700 block of Rock Creek Circle. That is in the Grace Chapel area of the county.

Kevin Brown, the county’s deputy fire marshal, said there was no power connected to the home. He said the blaze had “multiple points of origin” and appears to have been started by combustible materials.

A neighbor called 911 to report seeing smoke coming from the eaves of the home and flames through the kitchen window. The mobile home’s owner used it as a rental unit.

Brown said the mobile home was a total loss, with a damage estimate of about $6,000. Anyone with information in the case is asked to call the fire marshal’s office, 828-757-1280.
