Police: Resident finds armed teen in home

A 17-year-old is facing several charges, police said, after a northwest Charlotte resident returned home midday Wednesday to find a masked man inside with a gun.

Around 2:45 p.m. Wednesday, officers were called to a home on Mearn Road in the Quail Ridge neighborhood off Oakdale Road. A neighbor had called 911, telling dispatchers about a suspicious man at a home nearby, according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg police.

When officers arrived, they couldn’t find the man, police said.

But a short time later, someone who lives in the same neighborhood came home and discovered a man inside. Police said the suspect, who wore a mask and carried a handgun, then fled.

Officers who’d responded to the earlier report of a suspicious man were still in the neighborhood and chased the suspect as he ran away, police said.

They soon apprehended the suspect, identified as Trevon Steven Rutherford, and charged him with possession of stolen goods, larceny of a gun, possession of a stolen gun, resisting an officer, larceny, possession of a handgun by minor and two counts of breaking and entering. He remained in the Mecklenburg jail Thursday night under a $33,000 bond.

Police said the handgun Rutherford was seen carrying was stolen during a break-in.
