FRANKLIN COUNTY, VA -- A 12-year-old Charlotte girl died at Smith Mountain Lake in Virginia on Friday morning, officials said.

The girl was on a float in the water near a dock around 10 a.m. when she fell off the float and went under, according to the Franklin County Sheriff's Department.

Family members could not find her, and a fire boat with divers needed a sonar unit to locate her body and pull it from the lake about an hour after she went under.

The girl was not wearing a life jacket, and the victim's 9-year-old sister was in the water with her at the time.

The incident occurred near Penhook Point in Franklin County, and officials said the girl was with her family visiting relatives at the lake.

The name of the victim has not been released at this time.
