A portion of Johnston-Oehler Road will close at 9 a.m. July 9 as work continues on roads that will move traffic to and from Interstate 485 once it opens in northeast Charlotte.
The N.C. Department of Transportation will close Johnston-Oehler at Prosperity Church Road in the Mallard Creek area.A new alignment of Johnston-Oehler is expected to be completed by July 30.The realignment is part of a $139.5 million project that will complete the final 5.7 mile stretch of I-485, which will connect interstates 77 and 85 at the Outerbelt’s northern end.A wide swath of land is being cleared for the interstate, from west of Old Statesville road to west of I-85. The interstate is scheduled to be completed in December 2014.The eight-lane freeway will have interchanges at Prosperity Church Road and Mallard Creek Road. A new design called a diverging diamond will be built at the Mallard Creek Road interchange. The Prosperity Church Road interchange near Prosperity Village will have three north-south feeder roads and east-west roads tying into the feeder roads. Those roads will create the framework for what is expected to become a pedestrian-oriented urban center.Johnston-Oehler Road will become one of the east-west roads at the southern end of the interchange.Currently, two streets are identified as Johnston Oehler. The realignment will connect the western edge at Dearmon Road to the existing eastern portion. Johnston-Oehler will remain closed at Prosperity Church Road. The interstate will cross that portion of the road.
