Work on the Interstate 85 widening project in Cabarrus County will result in lane closures and detours at night for the next several days in Cabarrus County, the N.C. Department of Transportation says.
Crews will remove part of the existing N.C. 73 bridge over I-85 and then begin the demolition of the Poplar Tent Road Bridge over the interstate. The projects are part of a $125 million project, scheduled for completion in November 2013, that will widen I-85 from four to eight lanes between Bruton Smith Boulevard and N.C. 73.
The project also includes converting the Poplar Tent Road and N.C. 73 interchanges to diverging-diamond interchanges.
Here is the schedule of work:
• Friday and Saturday nights: The left southbound lane will be closed from 9 p.m. Friday until 6 a.m. Saturday, and again from 9 p.m. Saturday until 6 a.m. Sunday, approaching N.C. 73. Starting at midnight, southbound I-85 traffic will be detoured onto the N.C. 73 bridge, up and over the interstate, and then back on I-85.
• Monday night: Lanes on southbound I-85 will be closed intermittently, approaching Poplar Tent Road, from 9 p.m. Monday until 6 a.m. Tuesday. Beginning at midnight Monday, crews will begin removing the Poplar Tent Road bridge, sending traffic off the interstate and then back onto I-85 at the interchange.
Ramp closures also will affect northbound traffic at the Poplar Tent Road interchange.
