A man was shot recently after Cabarrus County authorities say he tried to break into a neighbor’s home. The victim had a restraining order against the would-be burglar, officials said.

The incident happened June 28 at a home off Sandusky Boulevard, reports NewsChannel 36, the Observer’s news partner.

The Cabarrus County Sheriff’s Office said John William Ballew was attempting to break into a neighbor’s home when he was shot and then fled the scene on a bicycle. Deputies dispatched to the area found Ballew bleeding from an apparent gunshot wound. He had been struck in the arm and shoulder, according to a police report.

Ballew was taken to the hospital for treatment, but later arrested. He is charged with attempted first degree burglary, felonious possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was no longer in custody on Friday. Observer staff writer April Bethea contributed
