2 hurt in I-77 crash

Observer staff reports

Two people were seriously hurt Saturday evening in a wreck on Interstate 77 in southern Mecklenburg County.

The crash happened just before 8 p.m. on I-77 near Nations Ford Road.

Paramedics said they took two people to Carolinas Medical Center. Their injuries were described as life-threatening.

Authorities initially closed two northbound lanes following the crash, but police radio traffic indicates the lanes have since reopened. Around 8:30 p.m., the N.C. Department of Transportation reported congestion in the area.
