Matthew Bare of McKim & Creed has earned his professional engineer license from the N.C. Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.

Karen Dortschy, president of Open the Door Group in Cornelius, was named Toastmaster of the Year by the Advanced Communicators of Charlotte Toastmasters Club. She has been a member of the club since 2009 and a Toastmaster since 2007.

Benne Hutson, a partner with McGuireWoods LLP’s Energy and Environmental Department in Charlotte, was appointed by N.C. House Speaker Thom Tillis to serve a two-year term as a member of the state’s Environmental Management Commission. The 19-member commission is responsible for adopting rules for the protection, preservation and enhancement of the state’s air and water resources.

Moore & Van Allen’s Intellectual Property team and Charlotte Intellectual Property Member Henry Ward were recognized in the first edition of IAM Patent 1000 – The World’s Leading Patent Practitioners. Moore & Van Allen was one of five North Carolina firms named, and Ward was one of five North Carolina attorneys ranked.

Elfred Pinkard, executive vice president and chief operating officer of Johnson C. Smith University, is one of 20 senior college administrators selected by the Council of Independent Colleges to participate in a year-long presidential vocation and institutional mission program for prospective college and university presidents. Pinkard will engage in seminars, participate in consultations with mentors, and undertake a series of readings about the vocation of college presidents and the role of vision and mission in institutional leadership.

William Toole, an attorney with Robinson Bradshaw & Hinson, P.A., was named “2011 Eugene O. Daniels Volunteer of the Year” by the Catawba Lands Conservancy at the environmental advocacy group’s recent annual meeting.
