Bear pays weekend visit to Kannapolis

KANNAPOLIS -- The black bear that set off a series of phone calls to police over the weekend in Kannapolis apparently is hiding or has left town.

Kannapolis police report receiving a number of calls Friday night and Saturday from several areas of the city. Residents and motorists reported seeing the bear wandering the streets.

The first sighting came about 9 p.m. Friday on West C Street. Additional reports came Saturday morning and afternoon in the Jackson Park area of Kannapolis. There were no reports of close encounters between the bruin and humans, police say.

Bears occasionally wander into populated areas of the Piedmont. Often, say wildlife experts, the bears are younger males that are chased from mountain territories by older males.

Police advised people to leave the bear alone and to prevent the animal from gaining access to trash cans.
