Police: Monitor-cutter back in jail

A Charlotte man accused of cutting off his electronic monitor on his birthday last week is back in jail.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said Donald Lee Blakney was arrested Tuesday on Cypress Tree Lane, located off East W.T. Harris Boulevard in east Charlotte.

Blakney had been wearing the ankle bracelet since early February when he was released from jail following a January arrest on breaking and entering and larceny charges.

But on July 3, Blakney sliced off the monitor and went on the run, police said. That day, which was his 23rd birthday, he was scheduled to appear in court to face the January charges, but he didn’t show up. Police said he later cut off his monitor in northeast Charlotte.

Now he’s charged with interfering with an electronic monitoring device, a misdemeanor.

Records show Blakney is a felon who has previously been convicted of breaking and entering, larceny and possession of stolen goods. He spent about nine months in prison last year, according to the N.C. Department of Public Safety.

He was being held in Mecklenburg jail Tuesday afternoon.
