Man charged in woman’s assault at hotel

A woman was found unconscious in a northwest Charlotte hotel room Thursday afternoon, police said, after a man claimed the woman had tried to rob him.

The man, identified by police as 43-year-old Edward Timothy McClain, has been charged with assault with a deadly weapon with the intent to kill, inflicting serious injury.

Around 3:15 p.m., the manager of the Knights Inn called 911, saying that a man staying at the hotel had called the desk and claimed he was being robbed by a woman who was in a room with him, according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg police.

When officers arrived at the Knights Inn, located on Glenwood Road near Interstate 85, they found a woman unconscious inside a hotel room. Observer news partner WCNC-TV reported that she’d been choked.

Paramedics took the woman, identified as 39-year-old Yolanda Copper, to Carolinas Medical Center. She remained in critical condition Thursday night.

McClain voluntarily went to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s headquarters to be questioned by detectives, police said. During the investigation, police learned that McClain and the woman know each other. But police didn’t elaborate on the nature of their relationship.

Police said McClain will be taken to Mecklenburg jail after he’s interviewed by detectives.

Investigators were canvassing the area around the hotel to find any potential witnesses.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call police at 704-432-TIPS or Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
