Student trooper graduates

Wesley Medeiros was among 39 high-schoolers in the state who graduated from the 19th annual North Carolina American Legion Student Trooper Program. They were recently sworn in at a ceremony at the Highway Patrol Training Center in Raleigh. Wesley is a rising senior at Charlotte Christian.

The weeklong program is meant to give students insight into areas of curriculum they may be required to study if they choose this career path. Students were exposed to such topics as collision investigation, motor vehicle law, defensive tactics, defensive driving and gang awareness. Each morning, students were required to rise at 5 a.m. and participate in physical fitness training. The training focused on team-building skills, discipline and self-confidence.

The Student Trooper Program staff is composed of members of the American Legion and the Highway Patrol Training Center staff. To qualify for admission to the program, rising seniors or recently graduated seniors must be of good moral character and demonstrate qualities of patriotism and leadership.
