Amber Alert canceled; suspect is arrested

An AMBER Alert issued when a 2-year-old girl went missing from Summerville, S.C., has been canceled and a suspect arrested in North Carolina.

Haley Renae Briggs went missing early this morning at 122 High Bridge Road, said Capt. John Rogers of the Summerville Police Department. The alert advised that Briggs was “in extreme danger” because the suspect, the girl’s mother, was a non-custodial parent who had a history of mental issues, Rogers said.

Megan Marie Briggs, 19, was found in Haywood County, about 25 miles west of Asheville. Law enforcement learned of her location because of the AMBER Alert, Rogers said.

“The alert did exactly what it was supposed to do,” he said.

Haley Briggs is unharmed. Her legal guardians, her paternal grandparents, were making arrangements Thursday to retrieve her from North Carolina.
