CMPD costs-to-date for DNC top $5 million

By DIANNE GALLAGHER

A bomb detecting x-ray machine. A public address system that can reach several city blocks. And $300,000 worth of bicycle patrol equipment.

NewsChannel 36 obtained a document that shows, for the first time, what Charlotte-Mecklenburg police have purchased so far to prepare for the Democratic National Convention.

The 20 item list totals out at $5,305,740.61. That's about 10 percent of the total amount CMPD can spend on the event.

Tampa officials were given the same $50 million Homeland Security Grant to fund security at the Republican National Convention in August this year. Police there have reportedly spent three times what the document has CMPD at--so far.

The CMPD document shows nearly $2 million is going toward extra liability and workers compensation insurance premiums for officers.

The new command center, which has been used for major events uptown this year and cost more than $700,000, is included on the list.

Half a million dollars in upgrades will be made to the department's helicopters and several items were heavily redacted, providing little to no information except the cost.
