Wreck clogs northbound I-77

By Steve Lyttle

Northbound I-77 traffic in south Charlotte was at a near-standstill at 9:15 a.m. Wednesday, due to a wreck near Woodlawn Road.

The wreck initially blocked the left northbound lane, although it was being moved at 9:15 a.m.

Traffic was backed up for 3 miles, and motorists should consider using alternate routes -- I-485 for trips around Charlotte, or South Tryon Street for in-city trips.

There were other problems at 9:15 -- well past the time when the morning commute traffic grows lighter:

I-40 eastbound, Iredell County ... A wreck about 8 a.m. closed a lane between Old Mountain Road (Exit 144) and Stamey Farm Road (Exit 146). That is west of Statesville. All lanes are open, but it will be 9:30 or 9:45 a.m. before traffic returns to a normal flow.

I-485 inner loop ... Authorities report heavier-than-usual congestion between Providence Road and South Boulevard. Traffic is slowed to an average of 25 mph.

I-485 outer loop ... Traffic also is slow from I-77 east to the Carolina Place Mall area. That might be due to motorists getting off I-77 to avoid the Woodlawn collision.

I-77 southbound, near Lake Norman ... Congestion is causing slow traffic, from the lake down to Huntersville.
