A tractor-trailer driver’s fiancée died after the truck that the two were traveling in crashed on Interstate 485 near Huntersville early Wednesday.
Jennifer Fenwick, 36, had been in the sleeper area of the truck while Guy James Keech, 44, drove, said Trooper Freeze of the N.C. Highway Patrol.
Keech was seriously injured but is being treated at CMC-Main and is expected to live, Freeze said. The Canadian couple lived together and were engaged to be married, he said.
About 12:30 a.m., troopers responded to the crash on the ramp from the inner loop of I-485 to northbound Interstate 77. The truck went over the guardrail and crashed down into an embankment. Freeze said the cab flipped.
“He just took that curve way too fast,” he said.
Firefighters had to cut Fenwick and Keech out of the cab, which took more than a half-hour. Fenwick died later Wednesday.
The truck was carrying a load of large paper rolls. In May, a truck also carrying paper rolls crashed at the same interchange. Troopers say the load shifted, and they cited both the driver and the truck company.
