Charlotte police, firefighters hold drives for school supplies

Local police and firefighters have organized drives to collect school supplies for students across the area.

In Cornelius, police will host the “Pack the Patrol Car” drive to collect supplies for Cornelius Elementary, J.V. Washam Elementary, Bailey Middle and W.A. Hough High schools.

Cornelius police said items needed include paper, pencils, pens, crayons, markers, highlighters, erasers, glue sticks, scissors, binders, pocket folders, hand sanitizer, tissues, backpacks and lunch bags.

From now until Aug. 22, donations can be dropped off 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday in the lobby of the Cornelius Police Department at 21440 Catawba Ave.

The Gaston County Firefighters Association also will hold a drive through Aug. 23 to collect supplies for needy children for the upcoming school year.

Anyone who wants to help can drop off school supplies at any fire department in Gaston County. Monetary donations can be mailed to the Gaston County Firefighters Association at P.O. Box 433, Dallas, NC 28034. The cost to sponsor a child for the year is $25, organizers said.
