Have you heard of the MOMS Club? Its a national support group for stay-at-home moms, accepting moms with children of any age. With over 2,100 chapters across the country and over 100,000 members, they seem to know how to bring moms out of isolation and into their chapters open arms. Meet Julie Kramer, mother of two, and president of the MOMs Club of Lake Wylie - home to 65 local moms!
Q: How did you originally get started with the MOMS Club?
A. I joined the MOMS Club® of Lake Wylie, SC after I received a flyer at my childs preschool. At the time, my two daughters were one and two-and-a-half. I was looking for ways to meet moms of like-age children.
Q: How often do you meet and where?
A. A member of MOMS Club® of Lake Wylie can stay as busy as she wants! We have activities almost daily, and many days have two or more. We try to organize events into age-brackets so children and their moms can get to know their peers. We also hold a monthly social for members to get to know each other. Some socials feature a speaker or service project. The leadership board of the MOMS Club® of Lake Wylie meets monthly to plan and discuss upcoming activities and ideas.
Q: What is one of your fondest memories from your experience with the MOMS club?
A. Our slogan is MOMS Offering Moms Support and rightfully so! The International MOMS Club® is the first, largest and fastest-growing support group specifically for ALL at-home mothers of any age children. One of my favorite benefits is our Meals for MOMS calendar. When one mom experiences a significant event (a new baby, death in the family, or illness) a fellow moms volunteer to provide the family a meal. Additionally, the MOMS Club® of Lake Wylieenjoys contributing time and resources to various service projects, including Im a Kool Kid Foundation (www.imakoolkid.org).
Q: How did you come to be president of your local chapter? How much work does that entail? How many hours/week do you spend planning for the group?
A. After attending my first MOMS Club social, I knew this group was the place for me. Within my first year as a member, I was asked to assist as the Meals for MOMS Coordinator and soon after the Administrative VP for the board. I choose to volunteer as President for 2012-2013 because I would like to help other moms connect with their neighbors and community. Ive met many wonderful people and made lots of fond memories. I truly dont work more than five to 10 hours per week - we have a great group of moms who pitch in and keep it fun!
Q: Are there any fees or membership restrictions in order to join?
A. As a chapter of the International MOMS Club®, a nonprofit organization that provides support for at-home mothers around the world, we are only permitted to accept members within our chapters boundaries zip codes which for our chapter is 29710 and 29745. Yearly dues cost $20 and go towards the International MOMS Club®, our Web site subscription and various group activities.
Q: Whats the most shocking thing you learned when you became a parent?
A. The most shocking thing being a parent has taught me was how off-base I was in thinking I knew the definition of time-management prior to children. Multi-tasking takes on a whole new meaning when you are a parent!
Q: What are some of your favorite Charlotte-area places to host playdates/hang out with the family?
A. We are big fans of low-cost and free events. Some of our favorites include local parks and pools, libraries, recreation centers and kid-friendly restaurants. Our older kids enjoy field trips to learn about farming, making ice cream and cooking classes, while our younger kids enjoy playgrounds, storytimes and playdates hosted at members homes. Our annual Trunk-or-Treat is always a big hit! Additionally we coordinate a few options for mom-only events, like MOMS Night Out and book club.
