Garinger visit planned for first lady?

Will Michelle Obama show up at Garinger High School convention week?

Nobody will confirm – natch – but we hear it may happen. And it makes sense: On Sept. 4-5, the school will spotlight its much-publicized food garden project (we’re talking zucchini, okra, squash and tomatoes) and its fitness learning lab.

“Fit and Green,” they’re calling the event. And it sounds right down your alley, FLOTUS.

Judd busy during DNC

We spent some Q&A time with Ashley Judd last week. “You’re just showing off!” she said when we walked in wearing our cap promoting UK (as in University of Kentucky, her alma mater).

The actress and at-large delegate from Tennessee said she’ll be doing more than just partying and re-nominating POTUS when she returns to the Queen City. She’ll also be working with former Secretary of State Madeline Albright’s National Democratic Institute.

“She has a large delegation from around the world coming to observe our (political) process,” said the star of “Kiss the Girls” and “Missing.”

Top musicians headed here?

Rumors are flyin’ over which A-listers might perform at two big kickoff events – the press party at N.C. Music Factory and the family-friendly CarolinaFest uptown.

A Washington source said he’s heard names all the way up there: Foo Fighters, Bruce Springsteen (we swear), and Carolina’s own James Taylor and the Avett Brothers.

So we caught up with Mary Tribble, the hospitality event czarina over at the CLT in 2012 host committee.

Springsteen? “Probably not,” Tribble said, but she seemed intrigued with Sweet Baby James. “That’s the kind of act we might go after – someone with N.C. ties, but a large following.”

It may help that so many marquee acts are Dems “willing to do it pro bono,” she told us.

Stars gather at CNN Grill

This just in from Observer Teevee reporter Mark Washburn: Will CNN bring its trendy CNN Grill to uptown?

During past GOP and Dem confabs, stars liked to hang out at this close-to-the-action eatery, but budget concerns imperiled the enterprise this year.

Well, good news: CNN Grill is on for sure, a network insider says, though the location hasn’t been set.

Among those spotted dining at the Grill during the ’08 conventions: CNNers Wolf Blitzer, Donna Brazile and Gloria Borger.
