Northwest School of the Arts graduate Lacie Wallace, who had only two credits left to complete for graduation before her senior year, has had her eyes opened during a long-term cultural study abroad program in Germany.

She’s been “exposed to a totally different way of life. ... The most important thing I have learned here that I didn’t really take seriously before is this: Hundreds of different cultures exist on this Earth, and not one of them is right or wrong or stupid or weird.”

Lacie was able to study overseas on a scholarship from the Rotary Youth Exchange program. She also had a scholarship from the German Foundation in Charlotte led by Kurt Waldhausen. He has a strong relationship with the language programs at Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools.

Lacie has traveled to Hungary, the Czech Republic, Austria, Italy, France, Monaco, Belgium, and the Netherlands. Although her host country is Germany, she has made friends with exchange students from Brazil, Mexico, Ecuador, France, Finland, South Africa, Australia, Canada, South Korea and Japan.
