Bridge work snarls I-85 in Cabarrus

More than 8 miles of backed-up traffic is reported on northbound Interstate 85 on Tuesday morning in Cabarrus County.

The problem is a large pothole that developed on a bridge near mile marker 55. Crews have been working on the project for several hours, but the N.C. Department of Transportation says it could be midday before the hole is repaired and the right northbound lane reopened.

At 9:15 a.m., traffic was snarled all the way back to Harris Boulevard.

Unfortunately, U.S. 29 is not a good alternative. Traffic on that route is heavy and also moving slowly.
