ACC honors BC's Luke Kuechly, Duke's Becca Ward as athletes of year

GREENSBORO - Former Boston College linebacker Luke Kuechly and Duke fencer Becca Ward are the Atlantic Coast Conference's athletes of the year.

The league made the announcement Tuesday following a vote of Atlantic Coast Sports Media Association members.

Kuechly is the first recipient honored solely for his work as a defensive football player. He received 13 of 31 votes and set NCAA records with 14 tackles per career game and 15.92 tackles per game in a season.

He was drafted last spring by the Carolina Panthers with the No. 9 overall pick.

Ward received 10 votes after becoming the fourth woman in the 23-year history of the NCAA fencing championships to win three national titles.
