“Everybody needs a sense of comfort and belonging – homeownership does just that,” says Richard Webb, chairman of the board of directors for the Community Housing Development Corporation of Mooresville and South Iredell. “Once you get a home that you are proud of, it is good and beneficial for you, your family and your town.” Richard has witnessed this phenomenon time and time again as the CHDC has changed the lives of dozens of local families over the years.

Established in 1997, the nonprofit has built 26 homes in Iredell County, including in the Cascade Mills, Cascade Estates and Burke Dale communities. But the group’s mission has always extended farther than simply providing low- and moderate-income families with affordable housing.

“Even before the challenges of the current economy, we emphasized the importance of home-buying education through innovative programs,” Richard says. “We work with families throughout the entire process by teaching them crucial financial skills, and in the end, building homes for them.”

Aiding people through the quest for homeownership remains the organization’s main focus. However, the Great Recession has caused the nonprofit to shift some of its focus.

“The housing market has been hit hard and many people are scared to make the jump into homeownership. That’s the reason we are getting into the rental business, so people in the community can still access our resources and educational services.”

In addition to breaking into the rental market, the organization hopes to also partner with other associations in the county in order to broaden its services and help more families find a home of their own.
