Arson blamed for Hickory fire

HICKORY -- Fire officials in Hickory say arson was to blame for a fire that damaged a room Wednesday morning at a motel.

The fire was reported shortly before 9 a.m. in a second-floor room of the Red Roof Inn, in the 1100 block of Lenoir-Rhyne Boulevard SE. Firefighters found light smoke visible on the second floor when they arrived.

The fire was brought under control quickly, and fire department spokesman Thomas Raper said damage was estimated at $8,000.

No injuries were reported.
